Read on to find out more about choosing a Furreal Cat
Our four-year-old Miranda has been begging us for a cat for as long as she’s
been aware of the domestic short hair’s existence. Unfortunately, her enthusiasm is not shared by the rest of the family. None of us have ever been pet people, and we certainly don’t need the added cost and responsibility of cat ownership (however small it may seem when compared to the cost of a dog). The food and housing and cat toys aren’t a huge deal, but we’ve never been a fan of the smell of the litter box. That, and given that our second child is on the way right
now and we may possibly opt for a third before we call it quits, my wife can’t be stuck changing the box herself.
We’re certainly open to the possibility once Miranda is old enough to take care of a cat on her own—we’ve always encouraged her in her hobbies and loves, even when they don’t seem compatible with our own convenience or aspirations. But for now, we had to say no. After more than a couple of arguments and crying spells, we finally realized we weren’t getting out of this without at least some kind of compromise.
A Reasonable Compromise
As I neared my wit’s end, the answer came as we were having dinner with our neighbors. The first thing we saw when we entered the house was their elementary-age children playing with two cats, and naturally Miranda was drawn to them. But after a double-take, I realized they weren’t real cats, they were that new Furreal Friends cat from Hasbro that I’ve heard so much about. Before I could even begin to consider this alternative, Miranda was already hooked on the neighbors’ Furreal Friends kitty cat.
She was plenty enamored of the realistic movements of these Furreal cats. They were rolling over, responding to petting, purring, and even meowing- a cat version of “hello.” Their fur was soft and realistic. I wouldn’t have known the difference if I hadn’t paid closer attention.
That made my decision pretty easy. We were both spared the dilemma of denying her deepest wish, and now we also knew exactly what to give her for her birthday this year. This Furreal cat would be the perfect replacement for a living kitten and all the responsibilities that would have come with it.
Sure enough, when Miranda’s birthday came around, the last present she opened was the one that contained her new Furreal Friends white cat. At first we had a little worry that this might make her want a new cat even more. After seeing her inseparably attached to her new cat, I wasn’t sure she’d even pay attention if she had a real cat.
I was pleased to see that we’d found the best of both worlds: Miranda indulged her cat obsession, and we quelled her desire to have a real cat, or at least she’d be happy until she was a little older, more responsible, and able to handle the full time care of a real pet.
